To The One Who Was Told To Always Toe The Line

Oh what a terrible bore the Flying Monkeys are!
They swing from tree to tree
And sing their Demon song.

The same old verse — “The King comes First!”
And you, my dear, must sing along.

There will be a light at the end of the tunnel, they said,
And when you see it, (and see it you will)
You must turn right back on your heels, wade through the muck
And find your way back into this rabbit-hole again.

(They say…)

You may blink once for a ‘Yes’, and twice for a ‘Maybe’
But let there not be a ‘NO!’
And heaven forbid, you learn to breathe,
The Flying Monkeys will always know.

But here’s the thing about chimps, my darling
They are all but primitive bots.

You may dress them up in hats and bow-ties,
You may tie them up in diamond knots;
But…
For all their shine, and righteous whine
Human’ they are not.

They’ll hold your hand and guide you to the gallows
They will help you make your bed.
But as the world goes up in mushroom clouds
They’ll run for the hills
and let you grace the gas chambers alone.

So if it’s kindness you need, or a shoulder to lean on
Or you wish to make your sunshine last…
Leave the battle!
Forget the wars!
Retreat to safe harbours fast.

Darling girl, if you seek the light
If you see a light…
and see it you must!
You will!
Put your game face on, cut the mad-hatters off
Keep calm, my love, and carry on.
