…. And His Quest To Be A Better Man.

There was once a little boy
Who thought nobody would love him.
For every time he asked for it
The world just made him cry.

Laughing was his favorite thing
His laughter made the others smile.
And he knew while they were smiling
They would love him, even if just for a little while.

He loved to tell stories
Of mountains. And sea-monsters.
Of Killing lions with his two bare hands.
But they told him the boy in the stories was a much better man.

So, he made up a whole new world
For every person he ever met.
And hoped they loved the man they saw in these
Never knowing the little boy they had never met.

Looking for the bluest sky he roamed
Far and wide, and danced with the clouds.
Chasing for his own blue skies
He ran and ran, till he couldn’t be found.

One day he found the world’s tallest tree
In wonder and awe he thought, Could it really be…
That the world wasn’t so unfair after all?
Because it gave him the greenest, tallest tree there ever was.

The tree became his stairway to heaven. You see,
It got him closer to his very own piece of sky.
The closer he got, the more he thought,
He could now be a much loved boy.

Then came winter, the sky lost colour
His tree had all but it’s last leaf left.
Nothing looked the same anymore
And the boy just wept and wept.

Where is my sky, where is my tree, he cried
Why did it all change, why couldn’t it be mine?
Was it true all along, what they said
That every thing he ever loved
Would come to a gruesome end?

The little boy ran away again
He ran till the earth fell off from under his feet.
And there in no-man’s-land
He sat singing ballads bittersweet.

He hid in a cave by the lost lake.
He was so angry, he stole all the stars from the night sky.
He plucked them one by one, and hid them
In a corner of his heart no one would ever come by.

Now these would always stay his, he vowed
Safe in the dark, away from hungry eyes.
Nobody would ever take them away from him
He would never ever suffer anymore painful goodbyes.

Without the stars, the sky lost it’s magic.
No one could make wishes come true anymore.
The world just stayed black and dark
And the boy missed his blue sky more and more.

The birds got lonely, the sun was sad
The tree waited for it’s leaves to grow back.
They all asked the boy to let the stars go. He wouldn’t.
The stolen stars were the only light he now had.

He was scared to be alone. Loneliness had never treated him well
He preferred the dark, damp air, breathing black
Where no one could see his face
Or know that he didn’t measure up to be a better man.

One day the wind got tired and cross
And howled and turned into a raging storm.
It picked the boy up in it’s whirlpool spout
And knocked him to the ground.

His heart split open
The stars spilled out
The wind then gently
Carried them into the lap of dawn.

Magic slowly twinkled back in
The sky turned purple, then pink, then blue.
The little boy, when he open his eyes
Saw again the world he once knew.

The only difference was that, he was now
By the lost lake, cold, with his heart hung out to dry.
So he reasoned with himself…
A boy without a heart
Was the only way
To make the sun shine in the blue sky.

. . .
